In 1945, the poet from Bilbao, Blas de Otero, was admitted to a mental sanatorium in Usurbil after struggling for a long time with a depression he could no longer bear. He entered as a believer in religious faith but left the center with faith in the power of the people to fight against the injustices they had endured since the Civil War. It was there that he must have discovered the true condition of human existence; as he later wrote: «This is to be human: horror in abundance. / To be – and not be – eternal, fugitives. / Angel with large wings of chains!» What kind of visit did he receive within the walls of his cell that caused this transformation?
Notas. / Notes on the piece.
«This work is a poem dedicated to the poet from Bilbao, Blas de Otero, and to the memories of his life and the creative process of his work. But above all, it is the story of a psychological depression and how to overcome it. The personal crisis the poet experienced converged with one I myself lived through; writing this play and delving into Blas’s biography served as support for me, and I trust that the work has helped others as well.»

«At the core of all my works lies the same seed: confinement. Sometimes, I write to stay away from the outside world, and other times, to escape from confinement. It doesn’t have to be physical: we can find ourselves trapped in a space, a relationship, a situation, a feeling, or even our own mind. I choose theater because it delves into the effects of social reality, power dynamics, and the shifting states that emerge in coexistence. My characters are reflections of my own uncertainties and those around me; often, they can do nothing but endure their adversities as best as they can. I strive to write theater that is accessible to all audiences, including those less accustomed to attending plays. All kinds of spectators converge in the theater, and therefore, they all deserve to enjoy the performance equally.» (Markel Hernández).
