Sinopsis. / Synopsis.

Durante siglos, el nombre de Erzsébet Báthory de Écsed, la “condesa sangrienta” de Transilvania, ha estado indisolublemente unido a sus actos de infinita crueldad. Pero quizá no fuera cierto todo lo que se dijo de ella. Este monólogo le brinda la oportunidad de explicarse, la cual no le fue concedida en su día.

For centuries, the name of Erzsébet Báthory of Écsed, the "Blood Countess" of Transylvania, has been inextricably linked to her acts of boundless cruelty. But perhaps not everything said about her was true. This monologue gives her the chance to explain herself—a chance she was never granted in her time.

En este monólogo de sesenta minutos de duración, el autor ha querido apartarse completamente de la presentación gore y truculenta que invariablemente se ha hecho del personaje, y quiere despojarla de su condición de malvada pintoresca de cuento de terror para, a través de un lenguaje cercano a la poesía, indagar en su condición humana, penetrar en las sucesivas capas de niebla que envuelven su entramado psicológico y sus circunstancias históricas. Atanes ha querido enmarcar el texto en los últimos días de encierro, tapiada en su propia habitación hasta su fallecimiento, poniendo en su boca las palabras que jamás pronunció en su defensa en un juicio en el que no compareció y mostrando la riqueza dramática de una mujer y madre apasionante en sus contradicciones (afectuosa y desalmada, filántropa y déspota, cultivada y demente, sofisticada y brutal) con el fin de enfrentar al espectador a la siempre perturbadora, aunque también siempre reveladora, visión de su propia sombra, de la condición inhumana que permanece agazapada en el interior de todo corazón humano.

In this sixty-minute monologue, the author deliberately moves away from the gory and lurid portrayals that have invariably defined the character, seeking to strip Erzsébet Báthory of her status as a picturesque villain from a horror tale. Through language that approaches poetry, the piece aims to delve into her humanity, peeling back the successive layers of fog surrounding her psychological makeup and historical circumstances. Set during her final days of confinement, walled up in her own room until her death, the monologue puts into her mouth the words she never spoke in her defense during a trial she never attended. It reveals the dramatic complexity of a woman and mother whose contradictions make her fascinating: affectionate and heartless, philanthropic and despotic, cultured and deranged, sophisticated and brutal. The goal is to confront the audience with the ever-disturbing, yet profoundly revealing, vision of their own shadow—the inhuman condition lurking within every human heart.

Biografía. / Biography.

Dramaturgo, cineasta y escritor. Comenzó su carrera a los 17 años haciendo sus propios cortos en Barcelona, donde desarrolló la mayoría de su trayectoria profesional como director independiente. Ha sido galardonado, entre otros reconocimientos: con el Premio a la Mejor Película en el International Panorama of Independent Filmmaker de Atenas en 2005 y nominado al Gran Premio del Cine Fantástico Europeo Mélies d’Argent (2006); al Premio Ignotus de la Asociación Española de Ciencia-Ficción (2007); al Premio Icon (Tel-Aviv, 2007); y a la Mejor Película en el BUT Film Festival de Breda (2010). Sus películas han sido seleccionadas en sección oficial en más de sesenta festivales de cine de Europa, Hispanoamérica y Estados Unidos. En 2007, se traslada a Madrid, momento en el que comenzará a escribir teatro y desarrollará paralelamente su carrera en el cine.

Playwright, filmmaker, and writer. He began his career at the age of 17 by creating his own short films in Barcelona, where he developed most of his professional career as an independent director. Among other recognitions, he has received the Best Film Award at the International Panorama of Independent Filmmaker in Athens (2005) and was nominated for the European Fantastic Film Award Mélies d’Argent (2006), the Ignotus Award from the Spanish Association of Science Fiction (2007), the Icon Award (Tel Aviv, 2007), and Best Film at the BUT Film Festival in Breda (2010). His films have been selected for the official section at over sixty film festivals across Europe, Latin America, and the United States. In 2007, he moved to Madrid, where he began writing for the theater and simultaneously developed his career in cinema.

Escritura. / Style.

Quienes le conocen describen su estilo dramatúrgico como: “Todo un universo creativo, tanto en cine como en teatro, con un común denominador: el nihilismo, la exasperación y el humor ácido y a veces desesperado. Una desesperanza tierna, de la que emana un espíritu de revuelta, situada en unos territorios apocalípticos, que a veces son materiales, –un paisaje desolado y opresivo, una fábrica abandonada, un mundo en ruinas…–, y otras veces espacios morales y psicológicos. Todo esto, unido a la riqueza verbal con que se expresa, resulta profundamente atrayente y tentador.”

Those who know him describe his dramaturgical style as: “A complete creative universe, both in film and theater, with a common denominator: nihilism, exasperation, and an acidic, sometimes desperate humor. A tender hopelessness, from which a spirit of rebellion emerges, set in apocalyptic territories that are sometimes material—a desolate and oppressive landscape, an abandoned factory, a world in ruins—and other times moral and psychological spaces. All of this, combined with the verbal richness in which it is expressed, is profoundly captivating and alluring.”
