Biografía. / Biography.

Todo empezó en la universidad. Durante mi segundo año del Grado en Filosofía empecé a interesarme por actividades culturales paralelas a mis estudios forjando mi conciencia política en torno a grupos de acción estudiantil, participando en el Aula de Poesía de la Universidad de Murcia, aprendiendo a a amar durante un curso en Salamanca y, sobre todo, dando mis primperos pasos en el teatro como actor en montajes universitarios. Y escribí. Escribí mucho, aunque no teatro. Tras estudiar el máster de profesorado, viví un año en Helsinki donde me remuneraron artísticamente por primera vez. Volví a España en 2017 y me establecí en Málaga, donde empecé trabajando bajo el mando de Angélica Gómez en distintos departamentos dentro de la compañía Surterráneo Teatro. En 2018 fundé mi propio colectivo teatral y empecé a desarrollar obras de mi puño y letra que, para mi sorpresa, empezaron a dar austeros pero recurrentes frutos. Actualmente, tengo la fortuna de dedicarme tanto a dar clases como a escribir, producir y dirigir obras de teatro, desarrollar guiones cinematográficos y divagar sobre filosofía, arte y entretenimiento para diferentes revistas nacionales. Algo se me activó cuando, en el instituto, descubrí la figura de Garcilaso de la Vega y lo que significaba el ideal de caballero renacentista. Salvando las notables distancias, no voy por mal camino. Quizá algún día llegue a ser ungido.

It all started at university. During my second year of a Philosophy degree, I began to take an interest in cultural activities alongside my studies. I shaped my political awareness through student action groups, took part in the Poetry Workshop at the University of Murcia, learned to love during a course in Salamanca, and—above all—took my first steps in theater, performing in university productions. And I wrote. I wrote a lot—though not for the stage. After completing a Master’s in Education, I spent a year in Helsinki, where I received my first artistic payment. I returned to Spain in 2017 and settled in Málaga, where I began working under the direction of Angélica Gómez in various departments within the Surterráneo Teatro company. In 2018, I founded my own theater collective and started developing original plays which, to my surprise, began to yield modest but steady results. Today, I have the good fortune of dividing my time between teaching and writing, producing, and directing theater productions, developing film scripts, and reflecting on philosophy, art, and entertainment for several national publications. Something within me stirred back in high school when I discovered Garcilaso de la Vega and the ideal of the Renaissance gentleman. Though the distance is great, I don’t believe I’m too far off the path. Perhaps one day, I’ll be anointed.

Escritura. / Style.

«Mis obras son eminentemente dialógicas, quizá por pura deformación profesional en Filosofía. Decir es hacer, continuamente hacemos cosas con palabras, como diría Austin, y me parece arrebatadoramente hermoso y necesario seguir edificando una cultura del logos en plena tiranía de de la imagen. Es en el teatro donde, como apostilló Lorca, el verbo se hace carne, la idea torna materia viva y se vuelve tangible. Por eso baso mi dramaturgia en personajes que discuten, porque no hay nada más dramático que la confrontación de ideas, que el debate escénico. Las pinceladas de estilo ya vendrán después. Me gusta proyectar sobre espacios vacíos que den el máximo protagonismo a púgiles dialécticos, precipitar dramas filosóficos en boca de actores interpretativamente en estado de gracia, incitar a la reflexión del respetable inyectándoles mayeútica en vena. Huyo de la convención en la que se ha convertido el posdrama y me gustaría volver al valor del origen y al origen de los valores, a un teatro en el que sólo hace falta un intérprete y un público que lo observe, se deleite y aplauda.» (Manu Collado).

«My plays are fundamentally dialogical—perhaps due to my professional background in Philosophy. To speak is to act; we are constantly doing things with words, as Austin would say, and I find it profoundly beautiful and necessary to continue building a culture of logos amidst the tyranny of the image. It is in the theater where, as Lorca noted, the word becomes flesh, the idea turns into living matter and becomes tangible. That is why I base my dramaturgy on characters who argue—because there is nothing more dramatic than the confrontation of ideas, than the theatrical debate. Stylistic flourishes can come later. I like to project onto empty spaces that give full prominence to dialectical contenders, to precipitate philosophical dramas from the mouths of actors in a state of interpretative grace, to provoke reflection in the audience by injecting maieutics straight into their veins. I shy away from the conventions that post-dramatic theater has become, and I long to return to the value of origins and the origin of values—to a kind of theater in which all that is needed is a performer and an audience who watches, delights, and applauds.» (Manu Collado).
