Biografía. / Biography.

Manu Valls nace en Valencia 1974 y desde bien joven se vincula al teatro. Primero, a los 18 años, fundando con sus compañeros de estudios Dacapo teatre, que termina profesionalizándose unos años después. Con Manolo Gil, arranca su formación actoral con los clásicos: Moliere, Calderón, Shakespeare. Valls compagina su trabajo en la compañía con el estudio de Ciencias de información. Se licencia el 1997 y comienza a alternar su trabajo como actor con el de guionista para televisión. Para Canal 9 y luego Àpunt, es uno de los responsables en escritura y, ocasionalmente dirección, de la serie más longeva y exitosa del canal: L’Alqueria Blanca (Premio Berlanga y premio de la Academia de Televisión a mejor serie autonómica). En 2005 escribe y dirige su primer largometraje “Faltas Leves”, con actores de la talla de Helio Pedregal, Mabel Rivera o Nuria Gago. A partir de 2014 se asocia con Xavier Crespo, responsable de Dacsa produccions y asume la rama teatral de la productora audiovisual. Dentro de su formación autoral, ha realizado talleres con Alejandro Tantanián, Romina Paula, Paco Zarzoso, Roberto García… Tutorizado por Zarzoso y dentro de los laboratorios de Ínsula Dramataria del IVC escribe El Negro una de sus últimas piezas. Con La mujer más fea del mundo funda su propia compañía La Penúltima teatre que coproducirá con Dacsa Produccions los siguientes espectáculos.

Manu Valls was born in Valencia in 1974 and became involved in theater at a young age. At 18, he co-founded Dacapo Teatre with his classmates, a company that would later become professional. Under the guidance of Manolo Gil, he began his acting training with the classics: Molière, Calderón, and Shakespeare. Valls combined his work in the company with his studies in Communication Sciences, earning his degree in 1997. He then began alternating his work as an actor with screenwriting for television. For Canal 9 and later Àpunt, he was one of the lead writers and occasional directors of the channel’s longest-running and most successful series, L’Alqueria Blanca —winner of the Berlanga Award and the Spanish Television Academy Award for Best Regional Series. In 2005, he wrote and directed his first feature film, Faltas Leves, starring renowned actors such as Helio Pedregal, Mabel Rivera, and Nuria Gago. Starting in 2014, he partnered with Xavier Crespo, head of Dacsa Produccions, taking charge of the theatrical branch of the audiovisual production company. As part of his development as a playwright, he has participated in workshops with Alejandro Tantanián, Romina Paula, Paco Zarzoso, and Roberto García. Under Zarzoso’s mentorship and within the Ínsula Dramataria laboratories of the IVC, he wrote El Negro, one of his most recent works. With La mujer más fea del mundo, he founded his own company, La Penúltima Teatre, which, in collaboration with Dacsa Produccions, would go on to co-produce future productions.

Escritura. / Style.

«Es un defecto o un exceso de practicidad, pero no puedo concebir mi escritura únicamente desde el mero hecho de la fruición dramatúrgica. Escribo para montar lo que escribo. No me considero autor de concursos, tal vez porque soy muy perezoso o como decía, muy práctico. Casi todas las obras que he escrito se han estrenado sobre los escenarios, así que el teatro que escribo, va de la mano del crecimiento de mi compañía. Siempre me ha apasionado el cine clásico y aquella forma de contar historias, así que gran parte de mis piezas vienen contaminadas por ese mundo. Becket, Ionesco, incluso las primeras lecturas de juventud de Mihura o Jardiel y ese absurdo algo más blanco, me fascinan. El libre albedrio y el destino tan presente en Shakespeare y sobre todo un tema sobre el que gira prácticamente todo lo que escribo de una manera o de otra: la familia.» (Manu Valls).

«It may be either a flaw or an excess of pragmatism, but I cannot conceive of my writing solely as a matter of dramaturgical enjoyment. I write to stage what I write. I don’t consider myself a competition playwright, perhaps because I am too lazy or, as I said, too practical. Almost all the plays I have written have been performed on stage, so the theater I create goes hand in hand with the growth of my company. I have always been passionate about classic cinema and its way of telling stories, so much of my work is influenced by that world. I am fascinated by Beckett, Ionesco, and even my early readings of Mihura or Jardiel, with their somewhat lighter sense of the absurd. Free will and destiny, so present in Shakespeare, are also constant references, but above all, there is one theme that, in one way or another, runs through almost everything I write: family.» (Manu Valls).
