Sinopsis. / Synopsis.

Los asaltos is a tragedy. The term, used in the A Coruña area in the 1940s to refer to days of dancing, introduces us to a world where dance is both metaphysical and lyrical. A world where dancing is a choral and polyphonic act, where nature is powerful, where the secrets of a burdensome family past that means confinement are revealed. In Los asaltos we encounter, as always happens in the tragic world, a past that is burdensome because it affects and conditions, and an escape towards a sea that is both a call and a challenge. Marina, like the great tragic figures —Tiresias, Max Estrella, Lear— sees beyond, because her sight does not stop at what is evident. She will bring truth, and also awareness, to a wounded family.

Notas. / Notes on the piece.

The title refers to the transformation of the word “asalto” into a collective noun. In the 1940s, in the province of A Coruña, the word “asalto” was used to name a day of celebration. The polysemy of this word quickly led me to the setting of the events: a day of dancing in a village, in opposition to the family manor house. The play would move between the “inside”, the house understood as a prison, and the “outside”, the open space. The title became plural when I decided that I wanted to write a contemporary tragedy. I want the audience to witness the pain of the victims of this family: several women who follow their instincts and have an urge for freedom, to transgress despite confronting their own truth and their death. They fall one after another, systematically because of the same tragic error, an inevitable act that clashes with the established dictates of the place. A village where the collective notion exists through a chorus that dances, sings, judges and informs the audience.

Escritura. / Style.

«Theatre has saved my life on more than one occasion. It has saved me as a spectator, actress, playwright and director. It has saved me through its power to question and emancipate, by valuing the margins and escaping mere entertainment. I firmly believe in theatre as an encounter with the other. Showing the intimate to the spectator. Working with the intimate alongside the artistic team and sharing it. When I write, I start from questions that obsess me. Questions that I enter into and never quite leave. But I investigate them. I investigate feminism, justice and humour. I also investigate the mechanisms that can help me materialise them. They are impossible questions which, as if by magic, take shape in stories told on stage and, it seems, soon on screen.» (Mariña Prieto).
