Sinopsis. / Synopsis.

Una gran corporación televisiva ha establecido el primer asentamiento humano en Marte. Un grupo de colonos protagonizarán un reality-show de alcance mundial. Al poco de iniciarse el programa la comunicación con la Tierra se interrumpe por causas desconocidas. Una expedición llega al planeta once meses más tarde con el fin de averiguar qué ha sucedido. Todos los colonos han desaparecido sin dejar rastro, salvo uno, apellidado Ricardo que les recibe visiblemente trastornado. Con el avance de la investigación irán revelándose los hechos acontecidos, cada vez más aterradores, y a medida que el superviviente despliega sus dotes de elocuencia, una implacable sombra de ignominia y engaño va cerniéndose sobre la opresiva colonia, sometiendo a sus ocupantes al yugo de una ambición infinita y letal.

A major television corporation has established the first human settlement on Mars, featuring a group of colonists starring in a globally broadcast reality show. Shortly after the program begins, communication with Earth is mysteriously cut off. Eleven months later, an expedition arrives on the planet to uncover what happened. All the colonists have vanished without a trace, except for one, named Ricardo, who greets them visibly deranged. As the investigation progresses, increasingly terrifying events come to light. With each revelation and Ricardo’s unnervingly eloquent accounts, a relentless shadow of disgrace and deceit looms over the oppressive colony, subjecting its inhabitants to the grip of an insatiable and lethal ambition.

Apenas puede calificarse ya de ciencia ficción la epopeya de colonización espacial a la que alude la obra. El proyecto de producir un reality-show en Marte a partir de 2025 existe realmente y se halla en proceso de selección de concursantes y la reiterada determinación de las agencias espaciales de poner un pie en el planeta rojo a medio plazo es más que manifiesta. La obra no parte pues, de fantasía, sino de un objetivo viable y real cuya culminación veremos en vida. Si no lo vemos nosotros, sin duda lo verán nuestros hijos. Y las nuevas circunstancias apelarán, como siempre, a los viejos interrogantes.

It can hardly be classified as science fiction anymore, the epic of space colonization alluded to in the play. The project to produce a reality show on Mars starting in 2025 is real and currently in the contestant selection phase. Additionally, the steadfast determination of space agencies to set foot on the red planet in the medium term is more than evident. The play, therefore, does not stem from fantasy but from a viable and real objective whose culmination we will witness within our lifetimes. If not us, then certainly our children will see it. And these new circumstances, as always, will evoke the age-old questions.

Biografía. / Biography.

Dramaturgo, cineasta y escritor. Comenzó su carrera a los 17 años haciendo sus propios cortos en Barcelona, donde desarrolló la mayoría de su trayectoria profesional como director independiente. Ha sido galardonado, entre otros reconocimientos: con el Premio a la Mejor Película en el International Panorama of Independent Filmmaker de Atenas en 2005 y nominado al Gran Premio del Cine Fantástico Europeo Mélies d’Argent (2006); al Premio Ignotus de la Asociación Española de Ciencia-Ficción (2007); al Premio Icon (Tel-Aviv, 2007); y a la Mejor Película en el BUT Film Festival de Breda (2010). Sus películas han sido seleccionadas en sección oficial en más de sesenta festivales de cine de Europa, Hispanoamérica y Estados Unidos. En 2007, se traslada a Madrid, momento en el que comenzará a escribir teatro y desarrollará paralelamente su carrera en el cine.

Playwright, filmmaker, and writer. He began his career at the age of 17 by creating his own short films in Barcelona, where he developed most of his professional career as an independent director. Among other recognitions, he has received the Best Film Award at the International Panorama of Independent Filmmaker in Athens (2005) and was nominated for the European Fantastic Film Award Mélies d’Argent (2006), the Ignotus Award from the Spanish Association of Science Fiction (2007), the Icon Award (Tel Aviv, 2007), and Best Film at the BUT Film Festival in Breda (2010). His films have been selected for the official section at over sixty film festivals across Europe, Latin America, and the United States. In 2007, he moved to Madrid, where he began writing for the theater and simultaneously developed his career in cinema.

Escritura. / Style.

Quienes le conocen describen su estilo dramatúrgico como: “Todo un universo creativo, tanto en cine como en teatro, con un común denominador: el nihilismo, la exasperación y el humor ácido y a veces desesperado. Una desesperanza tierna, de la que emana un espíritu de revuelta, situada en unos territorios apocalípticos, que a veces son materiales, –un paisaje desolado y opresivo, una fábrica abandonada, un mundo en ruinas…–, y otras veces espacios morales y psicológicos. Todo esto, unido a la riqueza verbal con que se expresa, resulta profundamente atrayente y tentador.”

Those who know him describe his dramaturgical style as: “A complete creative universe, both in film and theater, with a common denominator: nihilism, exasperation, and an acidic, sometimes desperate humor. A tender hopelessness, from which a spirit of rebellion emerges, set in apocalyptic territories that are sometimes material—a desolate and oppressive landscape, an abandoned factory, a world in ruins—and other times moral and psychological spaces. All of this, combined with the verbal richness in which it is expressed, is profoundly captivating and alluring.”
