Sinopsis. / Synopsis.

Father Ubú arrives on the shores of Tuba, accompanied by his wife, Mother Ubú, with the firm intention of becoming a slave to atone for his sins against humanity. He demands to be imprisoned along with his wife, unaware that he will soon be acclaimed King of Slavery by the citizens of Tuba, who beg to be locked up in order to worship his noble person. The Ubús flee in terror from their followers to the lands of Venizia, now the Republic of Bubuzuela, in search of better fortune. Upon arrival, they seize the palace of the elderly Lord País and immediately decide to take power. With the help of Captain Bordure and his usurer allies, Ubú wins the elections, appoints himself President, and manages to remain in power for more than a decade, bleeding the State dry—until Lord País decides to take revenge. Will this poor old man of over two hundred years manage to defeat the most authentic swine in history?

Notas. / Notes on the piece.

(Loredana Volpe).

«I began my training through practice. After participating for several years as an actress in my school’s youth theatre group and graduating, I knew I wanted to dedicate myself to theatre, and I had the opportunity to direct that same theatre group during my first year studying Letters at university. That was my training ground and laboratory for about four years: I trained others while reading and learning through trial and error, directing and adapting texts by Pirandello, García Lorca, Jean Genet, and Lewis Carroll, until I decided to pursue professional training in Acting Direction with Lisa Formosa of the Actors Studio in New York and in Playwriting with Xiomara Moreno and Javier Vidal at the Central University of Venezuela. Shortly after, I founded my own theatre company in Caracas, La Salamandra, with which I migrated to Barcelona three years later, due to the impossibility of continuing to create in my country. Once in Barcelona, while specializing in Theatre Studies at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the Institut del Teatre, I continued my training in Actor Playwriting with Sanchis Sinisterra, in Playwriting with Martin Crimp and Victoria Szpunberg at Sala Beckett, in Directing with Declan Donnellan, and, finally, in kleptomaniac Playwriting with Albert Tola and Rodrigo García Olza at the Teatre Tantarantana.» (Loredana Volpe)

Escritura. / Style.

(Loredana Volpe).

«Since I began working with La Salamandra, I have been interested in French playwriting. In particular, I was obsessed for many years with the works of Alfred Jarry. I was fortunate that the first project of the company was accepted at the Sala Grande of Celarg: a creole version of Ubu Roi, with fifteen performers on stage, puppets, and shadow theatre. Shortly after, we launched our second production: Ubu Presidente, an original text based on Ubu Enchaîné. Our third and final production in Caracas was at Sala Rajatabla and Sala Cabrujas: No Exit, an adaptation of Sartre’s Huis Clos, in which Fabiola Arace and Edmundo Bianchi—who had already worked with me in previous productions—joined me on stage. With this last production, translated into Catalan, I reestablished La Salamandra in Barcelona and premiered our first play at Teatre Akadèmia. After that came two seasons of Ànsia (Crave) by Sarah Kane, translated by Chap Rodríguez Rosell, at Sala Atrium; El Nino, which won the Premi Born de Residència Teatral and brought Enka Alonso into our team; and finally L’habitació tancada, which brought together all those who now form and collaborate with the company: Chap Rodríguez Rosell, Xavier Pàmies, and Marc Pujol, with original music by Àlvar Llusà-Damiani, who also accompanied us in Ànsia on stage with the violin. With this last production, we began a new exploration, focusing on the fantastic and horror genres in theatre—an exercise and exploration we hope to continue.» (Loredana Volpe)
