Biografía. / Biography.

Escribe ficción, ya sea para teatro, cine, televisión y también narrativa. Ha publicado el libro de relatos La amabilidad de los extraños (2010) y muchos de sus cuentos han aparecido en distintas revistas y antologías. Tiene el máster de Escritura Creativa por la Universidad de Sevilla (2010) y el MFA en Creative Writing in Spanish por la Universidad de Nueva York (2012), donde luego hizo un doctorado en literatura en español (2019). Ha tomado talleres de dramaturgia con Lizzie Olesker (Playwriting Practicum, 2011, Tisch, NYU, New York), Sanchís Sinisterra (La mirada dramatúrgica, 2002, CCE Costa Rica), Juan Cavestany (CCE Miami, 2014), Alfredo Sanzol (Festival de Olite, 2013) o Javier Berger (Universidad de Sevilla, 2010). Ha vivido 9 años en Nueva York, donde empezó a desarrollar su carrera como dramaturga con montajes de sus obras en Nueva York, Washington DC, Miami o La Habana. Participó también como autora en la antología de autores españoles New Plays from Spain, cuyas obras fueron presentadas en el PEN Festival 2013. Vive ahora entre Madrid y Sevilla y sigue escribiendo.

She writes fiction for theatre, film, television and prose. She published the short story collection La amabilidad de los extraños (2010), and many of her stories have appeared in various magazines and anthologies. She holds a Master’s in Creative Writing from the University of Seville (2010) and an MFA in Creative Writing in Spanish from New York University (2012), where she later earned a PhD in Spanish Literature (2019). She has trained in playwriting with Lizzie Olesker (Playwriting Practicum, 2011, Tisch, NYU), Sanchís Sinisterra (La mirada dramatúrgica, 2002, CCE Costa Rica), Juan Cavestany (CCE Miami, 2014), Alfredo Sanzol (Olite Festival, 2013), and Javier Berger (University of Seville, 2010). She lived for nine years in New York, where she began developing her career as a playwright with productions of her work in New York, Washington DC, Miami and Havana. She was also featured in the New Plays from Spain anthology, presented at the 2013 PEN Festival. She now lives between Madrid and Seville, and continues to write.

Escritura. / Style.

«Mi escritura se define en general por el extrañamiento de lo cotidiano, y por darle un giro absurdo o surrealista a las situaciones más familiares, llevarlas al extremo a través de un humor negro, que a veces transforma la risa en mueca incómoda. Me gusta experimentar con el lenguaje escénico, explorar las posibilidades que ofrece el teatro con esa increíble máquina de efectos especiales que es la imaginación del público. Montajes sencillos, sin apenas escenografía ni attrezzo donde todo cambie de lugar, de tiempo y de identidad durante el transcurso de la obra. Que la gente no sepa bien si debe reírse o llorar a veces. Romper la cuarta pared y también los techos y los suelos, buscar otros escenarios y otras formas fuera de lo convencional, pero a la vez cuidando el texto, convencida de que la palabra es un dispositivo inigualable para fabricar otros mundos pero también para entender este. Abierta a la experimentación y con ganas de trabajar junto a actores para salir de la soledad del teclado. Quizás uno de los temas que más me preocupan es la incomunicación y la soledad derivada de ella.» (Cristina Colmena).

«My writing is generally defined by the defamiliarisation of the everyday, twisting familiar situations into something absurd or surreal, pushing them to the edge through a kind of dark humour that sometimes turns laughter into an uncomfortable grimace. I enjoy experimenting with stage language, exploring the possibilities that theatre offers through that incredible special effects machine: the audience’s imagination. I’m drawn to simple productions, with little set or props, where everything—time, place, identity—can shift over the course of the piece. I like it when the audience isn’t quite sure whether to laugh or cry. I want to break the fourth wall—and also the ceiling and the floor—to search for other kinds of stages and unconventional forms, while still placing great care in the text itself. I believe words are a unique device for creating new worlds, but also for making sense of this one. I’m open to experimentation and eager to collaborate with actors in order to escape the solitude of the keyboard. One of the themes I’m most drawn to is miscommunication, and the loneliness that so often comes with it.» (Cristina Colmena).
